BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND

Known to many as the Godfather of South African standup comedy, Barry Hilton will be bringing bucket-loads of laughter to Ground Culture in the vibrant Observatory precinct on 20 and 21 November. Ironically, Barry went to Observatory High School, so it really is him returning to his roots.

The veteran comedian, who has performed to audiences around the globe for more than four decades, seems to show little sign of slowing down. “But I am downsizing,” he says. “I’ll never stop making people laugh, I’m just choosing to do it closer to home and in more intimate venues,” adds Barry who recently settled in Cape Town.

“We moved to Cape Town in April this year and since then I’ve been getting a kick out of discovering small venues pocketed around the city.  There is something special about making eye contact with audience members and seeing them laugh till they cry. When you’re working in a huge venue like the Sydney Opera House or the Grand West Arena, and your image is projected onto a giant screen so that people can actually see you, you lose that spark, that connectivity. I’m all about connection. And because my comedy is not scripted, I take cues from my audience, so it’s helpful to look them in the eye and connect with the people who have come to relax and laugh with me. To see and share their joy at escaping the grind of everyday demands and worries and just throw their heads back and laugh, makes me happy.” – Barry Hilton
